Five Points Overview...
Every child deserves to have a person in their life whom they can count on to be there during childhood successes and struggles... someone who will take the time to listen, to help develop a positive self-image, enhance their sense of well being, and provide hope and encouragement. For many, but not nearly enough, that special someone is a mentor.
What is Five Points?
Five Points originated in 2005 when Mentor Duluth received a grant from the Department of Education to create a school-based mentoring program. The program runs on the philosophy of a continuum of mentoring where the volunteer isn't strictly a tutor, but a support for the youth to help him or her grow both academically and socially.
The Tutor/Mentor Model

Five Points volunteers fall right in the middle between a tutor and a mentor. For this reason, there is an emphasis on relationship and commitment to the student than most other tutor opportunities. During the summer months, we encourage tutors and students to participate together in Five Points organized activities. If the student and tutor are interested in meeting more often and outside of the school site, Five Points staff will help them transition to community-based mentoring.
Children We Serve
The children involved in Five Points are identified by school staff or a parent/guardian as needing extra individualized attention to help them academically, as well as socially. These children must be in grades 4 through 8, and attend one of the twelve participating schools.
