Letter to Prospective Academic Mentors
Dear Prospective Mentor,
Thank you for your interest in the Five Points program. A goal of the program is to create meaningful relationships by connecting youth in grades k - 12 with volunteer mentors. We ask our mentors to make a commitment to meet with an individual youth for at least 45 minutes a week for the school year. The pair will meet at the school during a set day and time. When matching a youth with a mentor, we take into consideration personality types, interests, and academic needs. This is done with the belief that the match will foster a supportive academic and social relationship.
The process for becoming a Five Points academic mentor starts with filling out the volunteer application and match guide. These forms aid us in finding which schools and youth you would prefer to work with. Once we receive the forms, we will contact your references. After we make a connection with your references, we will contact you to schedule an initial meeting with the site coordinator working at the school that fits best with you. This person will inform you about the school you will be working with, some potential youth you may wish to mentor, and have you fill out paperwork for a background check. When we get the results of the background check, we will move toward the actual match process where you will be able to meet the youth you'll be working with. We also require that you attend an orientation and trainings. These will be very beneficial to helping you understand the age group, learning styles, subject areas and how to work with youth.
We are happy that you chose to volunteer with our program and look forward to meeting you. Thank you for supporting a youth in our community by becoming an academic mentor.
Sincerely,
Jeramy Katchuba
Five Points Program Coordinator
